St. Raymond - Player Submitted Locations

Post by The Reader »

St. Raymond is and always has been the capital city of the United States, on the coast of New England just south of Massachusetts. It experiences mild summers and snowy winters, and takes up generally the space that another world may have chosen to call ‘Rhode Island’. The city itself is a crowded metropolis full of business, academic, and cultural centers to entice visitors, while a short drive on the highway leads to the lulls of suburbs and forested parks.

The main parts of St. Raymond are painted in broad strokes, but it would take much more involvement to catalogue every shop, diner, and apartment complex of such a large area. To allow players to have a stake not only in the characters they build but their surroundings, we'd like to allow and encourage anyone to create their own little piece of St. Raymond and have it as a playable location for other players to explore. This creates a more dynamic, diverse collaborative environment and creates new opportunities for play! To submit a new location, check out the forms below.

Rules and Forms

Post by The Reader »

Rules for Player Submitted Locations

There are a few rules and caveats you should understand prior to submitting your player-submitted locations:
• Player-submitted locations should be public spaces or private spaces that have at least some public access. An apartment complex would be a great option for a player-submitted location, but someone's house might be less so (unless, of course, it's an open house).
• Player-submitted locations effectively become NPC style settings, which means that any players may choose to write a scene there at any time, with or without your characters present. If this makes you uncomfortable, then the setting should not be submitted.
• That said, player-submitted locations will not be permanently changed or destroyed without the original creator's consent. This isn't to say that temporary inconveniences won't occur--someone may knock over a stand at a supermarket, or graffiti the side of a building. However, anything larger in scope than breaking a window needs to be run by the original creator.
• Player-submitted locations should not be exclusive in such a way that prevents others from creating a similar setting. It is perfectly acceptable for a place to advertise 'The Best Coffee In Town!' ICly, but is in poor form to make statements OOCly such as "this is the only place with coffee in town". One is good advertising, while the other prevents another player in the future from making a different coffee shop. Where possible, please avoid the use of modifiers such as 'oldest', 'only', or 'best' in an objective sense.
• All player-submitted locations are subject to approval by the GM team. If we need you to tweak a location to match current setting guidelines, we will reach out. We want to work with you!
• If you need a refresher on the different notable neighborhoods in St. Raymond, you can always check out our St. Raymond Guide!
With that out of the way, let's get to the fun part! When you're ready, please use the following form in this thread to be considered for addition to the player-submitted location registry:

Code: Select all

I just heard of this new spot--
Location Name:
Tags: Short descriptors that people may use to search, such as "Bookstore" "Coffee Shop" "Public Library"
Neighborhood: Please indicate one of the districts or neighborhoods as outlined in the St. Raymond Guide
Long Description: Details about location/physical description. What is the place like? Are there special events seasonally? What makes this a cool place to have characters meet?
Connected PCs: Please link journals to characters heavily associated with the area, if you would like people to contact you in the future about playing there. (Optional!)

Emeri Park
• The Mirth Factory
By: sad_pisces_energy
comedy club, improv comedy, theater, comedy school
A small black box theater on the edge of the park. Known for producing several B-list comedians from it's improv comedy course, it is also a place to see a cheap show in St. Raymond. Several troupes of improv comedians perform every night with tickets at only $5. The performers rarely make any profit from the performances. The theater is made up of a few black curtained walls, two dozen threadbare red seats, and a paltry green room. It is also known colloquially as the MF, or less kindly by another phrase that MF could stand for.

• TOOTH & RUSTY NAIL
By: rexcorvus
bar, upscale, elite, drinks
An elegant, square building with an exterior made of black-painted brick and glass, the Tooth & Rusty Nail is about as upscale as you can get when it comes to a bar. It's got low, seductive lighting, leather couches and seats, and everything inside is perfectly arranged and placed with expensive linen napkins. All mixed drinks and cocktails are top shelf only; there is nothing cheap or common here. All the furniture is black, and there are abstract black and white paintings on the walls, which are hung with extravagant scarlet brocade curtains from floor to ceiling. There is both discrete security and doormen to prevent anyone underage - or anyone unruly - from sneaking in, but it is possible, especially if they're distracted.
Connected PCs: Ilya Volkov is the proprietor and oftentimes the Bar Manager for evening shifts.
• LARKSPUR AND LAVENDER
By: splendidDuchess
New Age store, rock shop, "magic" and crystals, fortune-telling
The decor leans more upscale jewelry shop than witch's hut, in that it is neatly organized and relatively minimal. Full of clean lines and bright airiness. The walls are painted burgundy and lush carpeting covers the floor. Skylights in vaulted ceilings let in light to light up the various crystals, stained glass hangings, and the many different plants around the store. You can also find tarot decks, incense, devotional statues for many pantheons, tapestries, herbs, and various other items for magical working. Some are even sourced from local artists and self-described witch bitches. Secluded in the back behind several gauzy and/or beaded curtains (as well as a closed door) is a place for fortune telling from the store's owner, Erzsebet Almasy. She generally uses tarot cards but can be asked about palmistry, astrology, and various other types of non-cartomancy divination. Dagny's hair wrapping service is on a trial run and may be added permanently to the store depending on the revenue it brings in. L&L has only been in operation for a year or so, but decorates according to the Wheel of the Year Sabbats, as well as for Pride, Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day.
Connected PCs: Erzsebet Almasy, owner and fortune teller; Dagny Hobbes, hair wrap specialist, assistant to Mrs. Almasy and general employee (ie glass case duster)
• THE BLACK PIT
By: sad_pisces_energy
venue, concert hall, punk, alternative
The Black Pit is an underground music venue located in downtown St. Raymond. The unassuming black door is nestled in an alleyway, and leads to a narrow staircase covered in stickers and spray paint. The venue is dark and moody, with a small black stage and bare hanging light bulbs. The carpet covering the main floor is thick with years of dirt and nicotine. It's disgusting and grungy, but it also plays host to local live music in the region. More often home to guests dressed in black with tattoos, piercings, and a healthy sense of anarchy, the musical hot spot is a meeting ground for the weirdos of St. Raymond.

University District
• WARDEN PRESS & PRINTING
By: AMItotic
Business, Printing Press
Between the universities and the more touristy commercial districts sits a building that might have once been a pharmacy, now home to Warden Press & Printing, a local institution for all things poster, flyer and book. Founded in 1986, the original location was barely a storefront in a strip mall, but since then the business has grown to a semi-industrial scale. The storefront itself is decorated nearly floor-to-ceiling with previous print jobs, book covers, and art, with a small selection of premade prints and bound journals to take home. It's behind the wooden counter where the mainstays of business happens, though--outfitted with several industrial printers, screen stations, and reams upon reams of paper. In the 2010s, Warden Press was a spotlight of culture in the area, sponsoring book signings and gallery openings, but has clearly suffered for business in the aftermath of the pandemic.

By: sad_pisces_energy
athletic center, basketball courts, soccer fields
A large building associated with SRU that houses several indoor soccer/lacrosse fields, basketball/pickleball courts, and a snack bar serving friend food and soda. Many sporting events are held here; most notably, it is the practice space for St. Raymond Roller Derby (SRRD), as well as the location of their monthly games.

• GLAZED AND CONFUSED
By: Ende
Doughnut Shop
A small building, with a hastily added drive through leaving awkward parking and congested traffic. Decorated with graffiti as invited by local artists including some very 'trippy' art and designs of wild doughnuts of unusual and classic toppings. Inside it is styled after a retro dinner. Black and white checkered floors and pleather-looking table tops with chrome trim. They sell bad coffee but outstanding doughnuts. Everything from classic doughnuts, glazed, chocolate covered, blueberry, cream filled and the like to wild affairs like buckeye, Ube, Rose-Vanilla cream, Cereal Milk, monthly specials fit approaching holidays or random 'days' from the calendar, the Buttered Popcorn doughnut had a very particular fan base.

• THE BOOK WYRM
By: Ende
Used Bookstore
The Book Wyrm looks like a simple string of windows backing up to an older factory building, windows old enough that they will never quite be clean no matter how often the proprietor cleans them, but still proudly sporting the golden lettering in Old English Script that the store is, in fact, the Book Wyrm, used book store. The wooden placard that hangs over the door proclaims the same but also sports a round-bellied dragon propped against a trove of books, and sporting another book open in its claws, with a lantern hanging from a long curved tail.

Today like any other day - the sign read 'Open', on a well-abused paper sign hanging on an antiquated door with a brass handle and kickplate.
There was no welcome sign, but the door mat just outside the door read 'Speak, Friend, and Enter' - there was another sign hanging on the counter which was visible to the right as you entered that read 'No Admittance except on Party Business - politely barring people from stepping behind the counter.

• ST. RAY PARTY & COSTUME
By: badly
Costume Store, Party Supplies, Sale & Hire
An obscure little store filled to the brim with costumes for parties and performances— masks, wigs, contact lenses, makeup and other special-effects supplies— and all manner of party decorations and supplies. It isn’t limited to spooky goods, but heavily features them, leering through the front windows of the store. The owner never seems to be around, but is known to delight in stocking all the rare and unique stuff they can get their hands on. Where they get the money to have such a vast collection and still pay their rent and employees, while the shop’s clientele is so small, is anyone’s guess.

• BLACK WIDOW'S TATTOO PARLOUR & ART GALLERY
By: Gee
"Tattoo Parlour" "Tattoo Studio" "Art Gallery"
Located in the west wing of an aging minimart next to a greasy pizza joint, Black Widow Tattoo Parlour (colloquially known as 'BW') has been a neighborhood staple in one of Little Ray's more industrious corners since its founding in 2013. B W has recently undergone a series of renovations in celebration of its 10th anniversary as a successful business and has a reputation for being safe and clean. The vibe is like something out of a dark children's storybook. Every wall is primed with matte black paint and then covered in bright illustrations and paintings contributed by each of the shop's artists. There are also individual pieces available for purchase, which passers-by are encouraged to peruse by a large sign in the window that reads: 'We [heart] local artists.' There is a waiting area like a living room, complete with refreshments (food and drink from the mini-bar) and a large, flat-screen TV. The shop's proprietor, named Maude, is a woman of indiscriminate age with thick-framed spectacles, bright purple hair, and tattoos all over her body. She spends a lot of time watching streams of the Golden Girls from behind the front counter. Local legend has it that Maude started her business with money she received from her abusive husband's life insurance after his vehicle dropped mysteriously off the side of a cliff. If you ask her about it, she will grin toothily at you and tell you to mind your business.
