The Reader: Querent Awakenings

Maybe it’s a quiet booth in the back of a busy bar. Maybe it’s the door to a business that wasn’t there last week, its wares unknown. Maybe it’s a folding table at the farmer’s market, one plastic chair empty and inviting. By fate or circumstance, your character finds themself in the presence of an enigmatic stranger, shuffling a well-worn deck of cards.

In every story, the stranger is different. Sometimes they are young, or old, masculine or feminine, large or small. The cards, too, are different, though always weathered. And it could happen over the course of a conversation or the hasty flick of a wrist from someone sitting in the opposite seat on the subway, but in this interaction your character receives a single card. A tarot card, to be precise, and maybe a string of words to offer context, meaning. And just as soon as it happens, the moment ends, the Reader moves on. And the next morning your character wakes up with a mark on their hand and the sense that something has changed...

The average Sleeper is a character with no otherworldly knowledge: no magical abilities, no strange dreams, no interactions with anything outside of what is so affectionately called the Real World. Some characters, though, awaken from their sleep. They are chosen for unknown reasons by a Reader, and are given some insight into other realities, some small power, and become Querents.

If you have an approved character and a Reader Token (either in your Player Account or in the Character Account in question) you can use this thread to start a Reading and awaken your character. This will be a GMed thread in which your character encounters a strange figure and are, in some way, given a Tarot Card. This card, in turn, grants them special magical abilities.

Readings can be intentionally sought out or chance encounters, and can happen anywhere in the general St. Raymond area. For example, characters might be at a fair looking to get their palm read, only for the fortune teller to pull a deck of cards instead; they might be in an elevator and entirely unaware until someone presses a card into their hand; they might be having a drink at a club and strike up a conversation with an interesting stranger, only to be left with a card as they depart. The metric by which the Reader chooses to present someone a card is not yet known, but these things are constant: they always use a deck of cards, it is always a single draw of a Minor Arcana, and the Reader cannot be forced, manipulated, or bribed if it is not your time to be read.

Your character does not need to give permission or assent to receive the reading -- it can be something that simply happens to them.
First cards are always a Minor Arcana. Upon requesting your thread, you can use a Fated Suit and/or a Fated Value item from our shop to determine which of the suits and assosciated element most seems like your character, or you can leave it totally random and save your Shards for something else...
